I asked for an industry tasting Monday at 9am. An hour later I had an appointment at Materra for 1pm. That’s quick. But Monday can be slow. And I ended up being the only one in this vast facility. See below.
The place is huge and should be very effective at hosting large functions or large numbers of tasters. The facility is new and still has parts that are under construction, but it’s very pretty.
There is a little cellar on the side where the library wines are kept.
The wines are very nice. And after tasting their flight, I was confused as to why the price-point was so low compared to other Napa wineries. They’re more along the line of Markham, Duckhorn and Titus. We are talking 30-70 bucks per bottle for everything on the flight. So, if you get industry, the prices are lovely.
The wines are very good. The blends are really nicely balanced. The Petite Sirah and Syrah are really concentrated and have lovely bright fruit. But the Hidden Black Diamond Mountain Cab is really spectacular.
Located in Oak Knoll, just a few minutes from the corner of Soscol and Trancas, this winery is as local to Napa as they come.
